a lot’s been happening, new pop-up cities, new projects, new directions, questioning the present and navigating the future.
so we’ve been kinda heads down for a while.
for new friends, the mu is a builder community that creates pop-up cities with social meaning, month-long, in-person experiments held around the world.
we’ve been to paris, thailand, argentina, ghana, ethiopia, japan, and more.
along the way, we’ve co-started movements like crecimiento in argentina, brought builder community and ethereum to the world expo, and supported builders and founders of different backgrounds and stages.

1. muChina 🇨🇳
it’s been two years since we started the mu.
two years of seeing wild ideas turn real,
been to places we never imagined we’d reach,
met people we didn’t know we’d love so much,
we’ve learned from local communities how technology takes on different forms in every corner of the world.
in recent years, friends from around the world have been asking how super apps, robots, drones, and evs are used in china.
so instead of explaining one by one, we thought, why not just bring you here? 🤣
so now, we’re bringing the mu home.
introducing muChina 🇨🇳, or more precisely, muHangZhou.
a one-month pop-up city in mainland china, 26th april - 23rd may 2026.
we’re expecting around 2,000 people from across china and around the world to co-live, co-create, and prototype an experimental society together.
like always, every mu project starts with a vision. 🫡
china is already one of the world’s largest tech, capital, and manufacturing hubs, yet most of the world still doesn’t know how to engage with it.
so this time, we want to show a real glimpse of china’s vision for the future, not through headlines or opinions, but through shared experiences.
we want to help global talents to connect with china’s ecosystem, collaborate with its builders, and learn how to make use what china can offer to achieve your vision.
in short,
to make china accessible for everyone.
2. why hangzhou
hangzhou just makes sense.
it’s the perfect place to showcase china, traditional and futuristic, local and global.
on the tech side, hangzhou is home to alibaba, deepseek, game science (black myth: wukong), and unitree robotics.
on the culture side, you’ve got misty mountains, ancient temples, west lake sunsets, and some of the most creative local communities in china.
and on the vision side, it’s one of the most forward-looking cities in asia, experimenting with drones, autonomous vehicles, and smart city systems.
it’s a place that feels like both the past and the future at once, which makes it the perfect home for the mu.
3. lowering the entrance barrier
we’ve heard from so many friends abroad who’ve wanted to visit china for years, but something always got in the way:
• it’s hard to connect with the right locals
• language barriers, app restrictions, and the great firewall
• scary media narratives like “not safe”, “no freedom”, “your data will be stolen”
we get it, and that’s exactly what we’re trying to change.
here’s how muHangZhou will help:
• bridge like-minds: gather diverse but like-hearted people from ai, robotics, blockchain, design, art, and music.
• lower the barrier: we’re working with local governments, startups, and institutions to simplify everything, visas, apps, tools, payments, even open internet access during the event.
• break the myths: come see for yourself. experience china firsthand, meet locals, and build your own understanding.
4. a glimpse of the venue
our base will be the alibaba cloud valley campus, one of the hearts of ai innovation in china.
this place is massive.
we’re not just using it for the one-month pop-up. maybe, just maybe, it’ll become our long-term home. 🤞
the muhangzhou campus sits right in the middle of china’s new tech zone, surrounded by alibaba cloud hq, nvidia’s new office, modelscope (china’s largest open-source ai community), robotics startups, and two top global universities.
there are restaurants, accommodations, labs, conference halls, and hardware workshops, basically everything you’d need to bring an idea to life.
it’s the perfect hub to introduce china’s tech vision to the world and a gateway for global talents to connect with china’s builders and innovators. 🤝
